July 4, 2007 INDEPENDENCE DAY

Be grateful for this wonderful nation and resolve to do your part to protect the gift that is the United States of America.

We won the battle! S.1639 is dead! The American people have spoken in such numbers that they were forced to listen to us.

I have always believed that we have the power, if we would only use it.  Finally, we used it!

I just hope that everyone doesn't relax and forget to keep using it. The war is not over. We stopped amnesty, but our borders are not secure and our immigration laws are not being enforced. Keep pounding them until we win the war.

Keep calling your senators in spite of anything anyone tells you. It is not over until they vote.

June 25, 2007

Don't stop calling your senators. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) is very wobbly on amnesty and particularly needs persuasion. Pound him until he gets it right. Tell him that the American people are wise to the game. We will not fall for a YES vote on cloture and then a NO vote on amnesty which will effectively allow passage of the amnesty bill. No amount of spin after a vote like that will convince us that he was on our side. It must be NO on cloture, NO on amnesty. The bill has been renumbered. Now it is S.1639. Click on Congress Members to the right to find all of Burr's contact information. The vote on cloture will probably take place tomorrow. Burn up the phone lines, folks!

Our Stop Illegal Immigration Rally yesterday was terrific. We had wonderful speakers and a very attentive audience. I think everyone left the event with tools to become part of the solution. Thank you to all who participated: William Gheen (ALIPAC), Ron Woodard (NCListen), Lee Anthony Nieves (You Don't Speak For Me), Former Senator Fern Shubert, Rep. Charles Thomas, City Councilman Carl Mumpower, Bill Fishburne (our MC), Rev. Wendell Runion (Invocation and National Anthem), and Bradley Page (pianist). Other groups represented by tables in the lobby or outside were Defeat Amnesty, The Granny Warriors, and the John Birch Society.

Keep pounding your own senators and other senators as well. There is much pressure being placed on senators to vote for the Amnesty Bill (Senate Bill 1348). We have to put more pressure on them NOT to vote for amnesty for illegals.

Our calls, emails and faxes are working. President Bush is now
desperate to win over the skeptics in the Senate. He just announced that he's ready to divert millions in new border security funds. DON'T BELIEVE HIM. THIS IS A RUSE DESIGNED TO TRICK YOU AND GET YOU TO STOP CALLING YOUR SENATORS.

President Bush's administration has had six years to enforce our
existing border security and immigration laws. Instead, he has chosen not to do so. Instead of being allowed to do their job, our border agents are being prosecuted by Federal-appointed attorneys and judges. If Bush were really serious about border security, he would have pardoned agents Ramos and Campion who are now serving ten years for shooting an illegal alien drug dealer in the rear. As many of you know, the drug dealer was given government immunity from prosecution, free U.S. healthcare and is now suing the U.S. for $5 million. Where's the fence Congress approved last year? Bush can toss all the money he wants to border security but history has taught us, nothing will be
done.

Keep calling as many Senators as you can. The GOP ones are especially important because they're the ones Bush's folks are targeting. Tell them that we don't need a guest worker program and we don't believe that Bush's border security funds will be put to good use. If we would simply enforce our existing laws, the illegal immigration problem would largely take care of itself. No guest worker bill! Not now, not ever!

Mark your calendars: Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Ferguson Auditorium at AB-Tech in Asheville, NC. At 2pm we will hold a Stop Illegal Immigration Rally. Please plan to join us.

Our confirmed speakers are William Gheen of ALIPAC, Ron Woodard of NC Listen, Rep. Fern Shubert, Rep. Charles Thomas, Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower, and David Marlett of USPatriotCompanies.com

We won the battle over Senate Bill 1348. Victory is sweet, but don't get complacent. The war isn't over. Take a quick break and get right back to the fight.

Victory last night proved that we do have power. When enough of us stick together and work hard, we can effect positive change. Let's keep the momentum going. Make the government at every level know that we will not tolerate illegal immigration any longer. Tell them to fix it or expect to be thrown out of office at the next election.

On the local level, Asheville City Councilman, Carl Mumpower, will soon be introducing recommendations for the city of Asheville to do its part to fight illegal immigration.

Asheville City 10 step proposal for addressing illegal immigration in 2007

1) Adding a provision to the city living wage ordinance that also prohibits our subcontractors from knowingly employing illegal immigrants.

2) Update on APD participation on 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act allowing for the appointment of local officers with immigration law enforcement powers.

3) Establishment of civil fines for the use of fake ID's with city employers/businesses.

4) Request that the city attorney monitor federal and state legislation affecting local government ability to respond to illegal immigration concerns and make ongoing recommendations on potential initiatives.

5) Explore city regulation of day labor agencies - requiring confirmation of citizenship for temps.

6) Update on reimbursement and action on transport of illegal immigrants to processing centers.

7) Establish a formal City policy to enforce all existing laws related to illegal immigration.

8) Require citizenship to serve on a City board or commission.

9) Provide web information on City site to provide information to city employers on how they may participate in the Federal Basic Pilot Employment Verification Program and IMAGE program.

10) Initiate Asheville City government participation in each of these programs as a model for the community.

Councilman Mumpower wrote, "It is my personal belief that illegal immigration represents a form of cultural terrorism against the economic, social, and personal safety interests of the legal citizens of the United States.  In the face of continued paralysis at the Federal level, local initiative is crucial to addressing these harms."

My suggestion: Let's use some of the same firepower we just used on the Senate to convince Asheville City Council that Carl Mumpower's suggestions should be implemented immediately. As we know already, Asheville City Council will be a tough sell, but we can do it. Start calling them and don't let up until they do it. And don't be concerned if you are not a city resident. Those who live in the county are significantly impacted by Asheville's decisions. And while you are at it, call the Buncombe County Commissioners, too. Tell them that you want Buncombe County to take a tough stand against illegal immigration.

I now have a little background information about the USPatriotCompanies folks. David Marlett writes:

I am a "recovering-attorney" (slowed down to writing, and to my own furniture-making business) who is a patriotic public activist (read: lighting rod).

www.USPatriotCompanies.com is simply a group of people in the Dallas, Texas area who have HAD IT! with the open-hiring of illegal immigrants. (Dems, Repubs and Independents)   About a month ago some of us were bemoaning how difficult it is to find a contractor who you can trust will do his best not to hire an illegal.  (We understand that for even the good guys, if they follow the law, it is difficult to be 100% sure.)  I looked around and was shocked to see no such listing existed.  I wanted to create and sponsor such a site only if it was free to the customers and the companies (no hidden agendas or "gotchas") and if it went national quickly.  So the site was built, and some of my network contacts came in handy.  (I was promised national news coverage if we can have about 100 members in a week.)  And so here we are.  We went "live" on Saturday, May 26th, and have been blazing away on the keyboards ever since.

"Who We Are" is really no more complex than that.

US Patriot Companies is the right service at the right time, by fellow Americans just trying to do the right thing.

THANK YOU!

The Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch just passed an ordinance requiring landlords to verify that renters are in this country legally before renting to them.

A recent article on the subject in the AC-T inspired a city councilman from Huntsville, Alabama to post on the AC-T message board describing the problems caused by illegal aliens in his city and the solutions his city council is implementing. (His ID is RoboTech. Scroll down to find several posts from him.)

This is how we do it, folks. Don't wait for the Federal Government to solve the illegal immigration problem. We have to do it ourselves at the grassroots level, city by city. Start hounding your local elected officials.

This article from the Christian Science Monitor outlines how President Eisenhower solved the illegal alien crisis when he was in office. Today everyone keeps saying that we can't deport millions of illegals. History proves that it can be done. In the first three months of Eisenhower's program, 80,000 illegals were arrested and 500,000 to 700,000 self deported. We could do the same thing right now, if our leaders were motivated.

How Eisenhower solved illegal border crossings from Mexico

By John Dillin

WASHINGTON

George W. Bush isn't the first Republican president to face a full-blown immigration crisis on the US-Mexican border.

Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.

President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents - less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.

Although there is little to no record of this operation in Ike's official papers, one piece of historic evidence indicates how he felt. In 1951, Ike wrote a letter to Sen. William Fulbright (D) of Arkansas. The senator had just proposed that a special commission be created by Congress to examine unethical conduct by government officials who accepted gifts and favors in exchange for special treatment of private individuals.

General Eisenhower, who was gearing up for his run for the presidency, said "Amen" to Senator Fulbright's proposal. He then quoted a report in The New York Times, highlighting one paragraph that said: "The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government."

Years later, the late Herbert Brownell Jr., Eisenhower's first attorney general, said in an interview with this writer that the president had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration when he took office.

America "was faced with a breakdown in law enforcement on a very large scale," Mr. Brownell said. "When I say large scale, I mean hundreds of thousands were coming in from Mexico [every year] without restraint."

Although an on-and-off guest-worker program for Mexicans was operating at the time, farmers and ranchers in the Southwest had become dependent on an additional low-cost, docile, illegal labor force of up to 3 million, mostly Mexican, laborers.

According to the Handbook of Texas Online, published by the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas State Historical Association, this illegal workforce had a severe impact on the wages of ordinary working Americans. The Handbook Online reports that a study by the President's Commission on Migratory Labor in Texas in 1950 found that cotton growers in the Rio Grande Valley, where most illegal aliens in Texas worked, paid wages that were "approximately half" the farm wages paid elsewhere in the state.

Profits from illegal labor led to the kind of corruption that apparently worried Eisenhower. Joseph White, a retired 21-year veteran of the Border Patrol, says that in the early 1950s, some senior US officials overseeing immigration enforcement "had friends among the ranchers," and agents "did not dare" arrest their illegal workers.

Walt Edwards, who joined the Border Patrol in 1951, tells a similar story. He says: "When we caught illegal aliens on farms and ranches, the farmer or rancher would often call and complain [to officials in El Paso]. And depending on how politically connected they were, there would be political intervention. That is how we got into this mess we are in now."

Bill Chambers, who worked for a combined 33 years for the Border Patrol and the then-called US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), says politically powerful people are still fueling the flow of illegals.

During the 1950s, however, this "Good Old Boy" system changed under Eisenhower - if only for about 10 years.

In 1954, Ike appointed retired Gen. Joseph "Jumpin' Joe" Swing, a former West Point classmate and veteran of the 101st Airborne, as the new INS commissioner.

Influential politicians, including Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson (D) of Texas and Sen. Pat McCarran (D) of Nevada, favored open borders, and were dead set against strong border enforcement, Brownell said. But General Swing's close connections to the president shielded him - and the Border Patrol - from meddling by powerful political and corporate interests.

One of Swing's first decisive acts was to transfer certain entrenched immigration officials out of the border area to other regions of the country where their political connections with people such as Senator Johnson would have no effect.

Then on June 17, 1954, what was called "Operation Wetback" began. Because political resistance was lower in California and Arizona, the roundup of aliens began there. Some 750 agents swept northward through agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions a day. By the end of July, over 50,000 aliens were caught in the two states. Another 488,000, fearing arrest, had fled the country.

By mid-July, the crackdown extended northward into Utah, Nevada, and Idaho, and eastward to Texas.

By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 illegals had left the Lone Star State voluntarily.

Unlike today, Mexicans caught in the roundup were not simply released at the border, where they could easily reenter the US. To discourage their return, Swing arranged for buses and trains to take many aliens deep within Mexico before being set free.

Tens of thousands more were put aboard two hired ships, the Emancipation and the Mercurio. The ships ferried the aliens from Port Isabel, Texas, to Vera Cruz, Mexico, more than 500 miles south.

The sea voyage was "a rough trip, and they did not like it," says Don Coppock, who worked his way up from Border Patrolman in 1941 to eventually head the Border Patrol from 1960 to 1973.

Mr. Coppock says he "cannot understand why [President] Bush let [today's] problem get away from him as it has. I guess it was his compassionate conservatism, and trying to please [Mexican President] Vincente Fox."

There are now said to be 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens in the US. Of the Mexicans who live here, an estimated 85 percent are here illegally.

Border Patrol vets offer tips on curbing illegal immigration

One day in 1954, Border Patrol agent Walt Edwards picked up a newspaper in Big Spring, Texas, and saw some startling news. The government was launching an all-out drive to oust illegal aliens from the United States.

The orders came straight from the top, where the new president, Dwight Eisenhower, had put a former West Point classmate, Gen. Joseph Swing, in charge of immigration enforcement.

General Swing's fast-moving campaign soon secured America's borders - an accomplishment no other president has since equaled. Illegal migration had dropped 95 percent by the late 1950s.

Several retired Border Patrol agents who took part in the 1950s effort, including Mr. Edwards, say much of what Swing did could be repeated today.

"Some say we cannot send 12 million illegals now in the United States back where they came from. Of course we can!" Edwards says.

Donald Coppock, who headed the Patrol from 1960 to 1973, says that if Swing and Ike were still running immigration enforcement, "they'd be on top of this in a minute."

William Chambers, another '50s veteran, agrees. "They could do a pretty good job" sealing the border.

Edwards says: "When we start enforcing the law, these various businesses are, on their own, going to replace their [illegal] workforce with a legal workforce."

While Congress debates building a fence on the border, these veterans say other actions should have higher priority.

1. End the current practice of taking captured Mexican aliens to the border and releasing them. Instead, deport them deep into Mexico, where return to the US would be more costly.

2. Crack down hard on employers who hire illegals. Without jobs, the aliens won't come.

3. End "catch and release" for non-Mexican aliens. It is common for illegal migrants not from Mexico to be set free after their arrest if they promise to appear later before a judge. Few show up.

The Patrol veterans say enforcement could also be aided by a legalized guest- worker program that permits Mexicans to register in their country for temporary jobs in the US. Eisenhower's team ran such a program. It permitted up to 400,000 Mexicans a year to enter the US for various agriculture jobs that lasted for 12 to 52 weeks.

Mark your calendars: Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Ferguson Auditorium at AB-Tech in Asheville, NC. We have a big event in the works. STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFORMATION

May 1, 2007

Look for these new additions to our website:

Fire Coalition has a great 30 minute education program to bring newcomers up to date on illegal immigration.

http://www.firecoalition.com/30minuteeducation.shtml

We have added a new category of links called Buy American. We have only one entry so far. We will add more as we learn about companies that sell only Made In America items.

http://www.athleticappeal.com/

We are currently exploring the idea of a Stop Illegal Immigration Rally in Buncombe County. Tentative date is June 23. Stay tuned!

February 25, 2007

The Action Club is currently selling "No Illegal Immigration" buttons to spur awareness and to raise funds for our other projects to educate the public. We are selling the 3 inch buttons for $2 each.

Some of us have already been wearing our buttons everywhere we go for some months now. They are great conversation starters. We need to get everyone talking about the illegal immigration problem. I am pleased to add that I rarely get anything but a positive reaction to my button.

And don't forget to look at the "Had Enough?" items we have for sale on Cafe Press. We don't make any money from those items, but they are great for raising awareness. My "Had Enough?" t-shirt has raised more than a few eyebrows and has garnered a few nasty comments. That tells me that the message is effective.

Make it a personal goal to wear a button or a t-shirt everywhere you go. Talk to someone about illegal immigration every day. Share our list of tools for the average citizen to combat illegal immigration.

January 7, 2007

The November elections are behind us. After licking our wounds and regrouping, we all enjoyed the Christmas season. (No Happy Holidays or other generic greetings from us. It is MERRY CHRISTMAS!) The Action Club celebrated Christmas with a party in lieu of our regular business meeting. It was fun to hang out and enjoy the company of one another without having work to do.

Now that we have rung in the New Year it is time to get back in the trenches. There is so much work to be done. Amnesty for illegal aliens is imminent. Property rights are being trampled here in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and elsewhere via zoning and forced annexation. Citizens are becoming slaves to the government due to excessive taxation. Corruption is rampant in our state government. The only hope is for the people to rise up and say, "We have had enough and we are not going to take it anymore!" We must remind our elected officials that they are there to represent us, not to control us. We must take our nation back while we still have something to save. And we must do whatever it takes. America is a precious gift worth saving.

When we began this website, I had no idea that we would have people from all over the nation and from many foreign countries coming to the site. I know that many hits are purely coincidental. I suspect that some hits have even been potential illegal aliens checking out the local attitude. (I hope we looked unfriendly.) I have also been contacted by many citizens from many states who care as much about saving America as we do. It encourages me to know that there are activists scattered all over the country who are doing their part to make a difference. I hope that in the new year you will all be resolved to fight harder than ever.

Kathie Lack, Action Club President

October 16, 2006

The Action Club has endorsed the following judges based upon their commitment to protect our Constitutional rights. These judges will NOT legislate from the bench.

Rusty Duke, Chief Justice, Supreme Court

Eric Levinson, Associate Justice, Supreme Court (Timmons-Goodson seat)

Ann Marie Calabria, Associate Justice, Supreme Court (Wainwright seat)

Mark D. Martin, Associate Justice, Supreme Court (Martin seat)

Kris Bailey, Court of Appeals (Hunter Seat)

Donna Stroud, Court of Appeals (Stephens seat)

October 8, 2006

We at the Action Club believe that our greatest hope for fighting illegal immigration is to elect to office citizens who love America and who care as much about saving her as we do. Currently, we have five of our very own Action Club members running for elected office. RL Clark, Eric Gorny, Mike Harrison, and Charles Thomas are running for the North Carolina General Assembly. Don Yelton is running for Buncombe County Clerk of Court. The Action Club is working hard to help these men get elected because they are on the right side of the immigration issue. Between now and Election Day on November 7, we will need all the help we can get. Please consider joining our efforts.

Sample ballots are available at the Buncombe County Election Services website. If you have questions about any of the candidates running for office, please feel free to contact us. We will try to get you information to help in your decision making. Send e-mail to admin@theactionclub.com or call 828-626-2361.

The billboard on Patton Avenue, which was sponsored by the Buncombe County Republican Action Club, was defaced in two separate incidents two weekends ago. An article on the Action Club is the cover story in the print edition of the local Spanish-language newspaper La Voz Independiente, 3 De Agosto 2006, Numero 178 - Serving Asheville, Hendersonville, Greenville, Spartanburg.

The article is not online yet. The paper shows a photo of the Swannanoa River Road billboard in a 3/4-page, color graphic on the front page and in a black-and-white version inside the paper. The bright red, all-caps headline reads:

DEMOGOGIA EN LA CALLE

Billboards inflame, but don’t inform, immigration issue

Editor
Asheville Citizen-Times
July 27, 2006

It’s hard to imagine how emotion-laden billboards that encourage hostility are a helpful addition to the illegal immigration debate. The Buncombe County Republican Action Club paid to have two billboards posted July 13, one on Swannanoa River Road and the other on Patton Avenue, depicting a Mexican flag flying above an inverted American flag, with the words “Had Enough?” The billboard includes a Web site and an telephone number...

RESPONSE:

Dear Editor,

With regard to your editorial "Billboards inflame, but don't inform, immigration issue" (7/27/06), I'd like to point out that typically billboards are primarily locaters. They tell drivers where to exit the highway or that a sale on. Those billboards inform.

A political billboard cannot "inform" using paragraphs as you seem to suggest. People can't read a book while riding by in their cars. But a political billboard can lead viewers to more information; for example, by providing a phone number or website. But to do that, a political billboard must first gain attention. It appears that this one has performed that function admirably.

At the website there is published a formal resolution, a weblog, an FAQ sheet, and links to other relevant sources. If the AC-T had wanted to help "inform," they could have referred to the volumes of material at the website TheActionClub.com.

The editorial further states that we should try to find a solution that "honors the laws of our nation and the hard-working people" who are driven to come here.

Happily, we already have a solution that indeed honors our laws and the people who come here: It's called immigration -- legal immigration. And any solution that does not respect our sovereignty and our existing immigration laws demonstrates contempt and is "doomed to ultimate failure."

Press Release

The Action Club is pro-immigrant and pro-rule of law.  Also, we have no sympathy for illegal immigration or tolerance for those who scoff at our laws. We seek a government which meets the challenges of the laws the representatives of the people have enacted to foster more orderly immigration; we seek a government which heeds the will of the people for still better laws. We know and cherish America as a nation of immigrants and children and grandchildren of immigrants. Franklin D. Roosevelt, a son of one of the early American families, once addressed a convention of the Daughters of the American Revolution as "my fellow immigrants." Ronald Reagan observed that America is the only nation on the planet where a new citizen is as much an heir to the rights and traditions of his new country as one who traces his ancestry to the founding of the nation. We know and cherish the common culture to which immigrants assimilate.

This is the only true constitutionalist position: to welcome the immigrant and to honor the law which governs the immigrant's entry. Constitutionalism is under assault by a constellation of interests, corporate and otherwise, which are bolstered intellectually by the ideology of "open borders" on the right and by multiculturalism on the left.

The Immigration Act of 1965 created the most welcoming migration regime of any modern industrial democracy to which masses of immigrants seek entry. The 1986 amnesty not only ratified that regime but signaled the jettisoning of early- and mid-century schemes for immigration restrictionism. This is history and fact.

The United States remains the most hospitable country to the world's immigrants -- the country which accepts the largest number of immigrants by far, which holds the greatest attraction to foreigners, which offers the best promise of citizenship and where the greatest economic rewards await. This, too, is history and fact.

We regard America's humane treatment of immigrants, and America's allure to foreigners, as two of our country's greatest strengths. Few Americans, and certainly not us, seek a departure from that standard. We seek modification of laws only to protect our communities and to ensure respect for the law as the surest way to protect the immigrant's dream of a better life. That's what American voters want, and it's what the political leadership whom those voters elected must deliver.

No Zoning Protest

The Action Club, Citizens for Change and other concerned citizens marched in a legally-permitted protest at the County Courthouse at 3:00 PM just prior to the commissioner's meeting.

The commissioners voted for a zoning plan and the largest property tax increase in the county's history. The county's revenue-increasing property rate of 53 cents displaces the state's diluted reimbursement of sales taxes collected in Asheville from the city to the county in the amount of $1.52M and forces the city to raise its property tax rate above a 41 cent revenue-neutral to 42.38 cents to make up the loss in revenue.

Dunkin' joins program to verify if workers are legal

You may have already seen the signs* popping up at your local Dunkin' Donuts shop: "We follow the law! This company hires lawful workers only." The signs, which have begun appearing in shops around Boston, make public the company's participation, starting June 1, in a voluntary federal program that enables employers to quickly check the immigration status of new hires. Dunkin' Donuts is requiring all of its franchisees to participate in the Basic Pilot Program, which allows employers to verify a worker's status using online databases from the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security. Get Engaged

My country is in danger.  Illegal aliens are invading our land.  Terrorists are stalking us.  Corruption is invading our government.  The Socialists have already taken Asheville.  Now they are eyeing Buncombe County and making great inroads all over the nation.  These terrify me, but nothing strikes fear in me so much as the apathy which has invaded the hearts of our citizens.

Apathy is defined by Webster as a lack of emotion, a lack of interest, indifference.  Are we so blessed in this country that we have become spoiled by the very blessing itself?  Are we so used to the abundance afforded by freedom and self determination that we have begun to lose interest in the original gift much like a child with too many toys?

America is a great nation founded upon amazing principles which have been handed down to us throughout the course of our history.  Those principles are a gift to be cherished and protected by the citizens.  Our history bulges with examples of citizens who have taken that responsibility seriously, often to the point of giving their lives to uphold the principles of this nation.  Why then do so many citizens sit by and passively watch as America falls?

Are those of you who do nothing to protect her convinced that America is invincible?  If that is your rationale, get your head out of the sand right now because you are leaving your posterior in a very vulnerable position.  Sadly, even this great land can and will go down without proper care.  It takes constant vigilance to maintain America’s gifts of freedom and self determination.

Do you stand by passively because you believe that there is no hope and our country is doomed?  Thank God that our forefathers had more fight in them than that!  They had the courage to risk absolutely everything to give us a remarkable system of government which recognizes our right to be free and to determine the course of our own lives.  And when they did it, it had never before been done.  They did the really hard work for us.  Now all we have to do is keep it.

Are you waiting for someone else to fix it?  Have you thought about the consequences if no one steps up to the plate?  Are you ready to accept the responsibility if our nation falls while you stand by doing nothing?  Can you live with yourself if you let her fall without even trying to prevent it?  I know that I cannot.

There are many excuses for not getting involved.  You work full time.  Your health is bad.  You coach the team.  You ferry the kids to and fro.  Most people have responsibilities which limit their participation in some way, but personal responsibilities do not relieve you of the responsibility of being a good citizen.  We all must make it a priority to take care of our country while we still have it to protect.

There are more excuses. You wouldn’t know what to do. You don’t have the necessary skills.  Somebody else could do it much better than you.  Don’t ever forget that one committed and determined person who is out there trying is infinitely more valuable than ten highly skilled people sitting at home watching television.

How would a formerly apathetic citizen get involved if the spirit so moved him?  Just start by doing SOMETHING rather than nothing.

  • Inform yourself about the issues.  Don’t rely on network TV and the local daily paper to tell you what you need to know.  Look at a variety of sources for information.
  • Make phone calls.  Tell your elected officials your opinion about important issues.  Call talk radio to express your opinion.
  • Write letters.  Write to the various newspapers.  Write your elected officials.
  • Show up and speak up.  Go to public meetings such as City Council and County Commissioner meetings to see first hand what your elected officials are doing.  Tell them what you think.
  • Work together.  Join a group of like minded citizens who are trying to save our nation.  (Consider the BCGOP Action Club.  We meet the third Thursday of every month at Ryan’s on Patton Avenue.  We eat at 6 pm.  The meeting starts at 7 pm.  Party affiliation is not our primary concern.  If you really want to make a difference, this is the place to be.)
  • Talk to people.  Encourage others to get involved.  Inform them about the issues.
  • Vote.  Do your homework first.  Don’t base your decisions upon sound bites and a pretty face.  Make your decisions based upon the issues.

I have to believe that there is hope, that the citizens of America will rally for the cause when the survival of our nation is at stake.  If we stand shoulder to shoulder in defiance, we can take back our nation.  How close do you plan to let the enemy get before YOU take a stand?  They are at your doorstep now.

Immigrants march for fair treatment

by Hal Millard
Mountain Xpress
May 10, 2006 / vol 12 iss 41

[...] Not everyone was ready to sign on to that agenda, however. In a mass e-mail to the media and various local organizations before the march, Asheville City Council member Carl Mumpower said the federal government has let illegal immigration grow too large.

"Our government's willingness to ignore our porous borders and the harmful impact of the resulting flood of unskilled Hispanics so that we can buy cheap chickens represents a shortsighted policy with dramatic long-term consequences," he wrote.

"Arguments in favor of supporting illegal immigrants," added Mumpower, "ignore the realities of our overwhelmed social-service system, costs to our health-care delivery system, the dominant role of illegals in hard-drug distribution, the exhaustion of limited resources in our public schools, and a general erosion of our country's legal, cultural and economic foundations of success."

Mumpower also blamed businesses for contributing to the problem.

"The solutions to our porous borders are to be found not in fences, jails or beefed-up border patrols," he wrote. "Few Americans blame Mexicans for wanting to escape the dysfunction and limitations for most who live there. It is those Americans and businesses who choose to employ illegal aliens who create the attraction and opportunity that fund the flood. When we start arresting, fining and/or jailing those who sidestep the self-correcting nature of a free economy by hiring illegals at bargain rates, we will stem the tide and compel many to return." Dear Kathie,

Thank you for your email. I know that we need to take action when the President and Congress won't. To that end I believe we should crack down on illegal immigrants. We will work to immediately deport illegal immigrants convicted of a crime. Our local law enforcement should have the ability to enter into agreements with federal agencies to help crack down on illegal immigration.

Please let me know of any other concerns you may have.

Billboard

The Action Club will be evaluating candidates for endorsement. The first issue broached will be immigration. Our intention is to ask every candidate running for office to sign the attached document. Candidate positions will be included on our website www.theactionclub.com.

We have gotten approval from Fairway Outdoor Advertising for our billboard design. The cost for two 12'x25' billboards for two months is $1808. Three billboards cost $2046 and four cost $2272. We will be soliciting donations to finance this project.

Our billboard design was originally presented to Lamar Outdoor Advertising and it was rejected on the grounds that the image was controversial. A spokesman said that they turned us down because they don't want to put up anything which might offend someone.  He said that they own the signs, but lease the property on which they sit.  They are afraid of losing their lease(s) if a property owner is offended.

Every time you talk to someone who is fired up about the illegal alien problem, ask them to write a check to help us finance the billboards.
